Liu Yanran is an alchemist from the Sect. Unlike the stern, hidebound alchemists of popular imagination, she is lively, mischievous, and has no patience for doing things by the book. Drawn to anything new and strange, she throws herself into the most bizarre recipes she can dream up, which is why her cauldron is forever sending up clouds of smoke in every shape and color imaginable. Her experiments fail often and cause all kinds of accidents, but she never tires of them. Beyond her outstanding gift for alchemy, she also possesses an extraordinary sense of smell. To her, different herbs, minerals, animals, even people carry their own unique scent—one she can easily pick out even in a bustling crowd.
